English plays a vital role in international aviation. It's used by a wide range of workers including pilots, cabin crew, air traffic controllers, airport ground staff, dispatchers, engineers and mechanics.

Spoken English is important for many workers, but they may also need reading and writing skills. Engineers, for example, have to read technical documents and write emails or reports. Pilots have to read checklists and fill out weight and balance sheets.

There are many components to aviation English, and below are links to some useful resources. These resources may be useful for students (eg: Websites for English) and instructors (eg: Vocabulary Pictures).

“The fact is that English is the international language of aviation.”

(Acting Deputy Director of ICAO's Air Navigation Bureau, 2008)
